Catherine Bligh Counselling

“What I am is good enough if I would only be it openly.”― Carl R. Rogers

About

Welcome, and thank you for visiting Catherine Bligh Counselling.

I am an experienced therapist, registered and accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). I provide confidential counselling for adults in Tadworth, Surrey.

Most of us encounter challenges at different points in life. It takes courage to speak about those experiences, particularly in the presence of another. In a safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental space, you can begin to explore patterns of thought and behaviour with greater clarity and understanding.

Feeling truly heard can support emotional processing, improve self-esteem, and ease feelings of anxiety, anger, or overwhelm.

How I work

My core training is in Person-Centred Psychotherapy, a relational approach that places your unique experience at the centre of the work, rather than generalising and diagnosing.

My role is to offer a space that feels safe, supportive, and affirming — meeting you where you are emotionally, and working together to explore opportunities for growth and self-understanding.

While my work is grounded in a humanistic approach, I also draw on a range of therapeutic methods to suit your individual needs.

I am committed to ensuring my practice is inclusive, culturally sensitive, and accessible to all.

What areas can I support you with?

Whether you are facing a specific challenge or carrying something that has been with you for some time, counselling offers a space to explore and understand your experience.

I have supported clients with a wide range of issues, including:

  • Depression
  • Stress, anxiety, and burnout
  • LGBTQIA+ lived experiences including identity, gender and sexuality
  • Loss and bereavement
  • Self-harm and addictive behaviours
  • Neurodiversity (including ADHD and Autism)
  • Postpartum and parenting challenges
  • Relationships and communication
  • Trauma (both complex and single-event)
  • Adverse childhood experiences

Experience

I trained at City Lit University, where I gained a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I have since completed further specialist training, including:

Diploma in Trauma Therapy (NAOS Institute)

Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People (tic+)

Diploma in Autism and Mental Health (National Centre for Autism and Mental Health)

I have worked with a wide range of clients aged 11 and above across diverse settings, including GP surgeries, bereavement services, NHS staff support, performing arts schools, and secondary schools.

Before becoming a therapist, I worked in the arts and media for over 10 years and hold a BA (Hons) in English and Cultural Studies.

Neurodivergence & Support for Parents and Carers (SEND)

My understanding of neurodiversity is both professional and personal. As a parent of a neurodiverse child, I have first-hand experience of the challenges that can come with navigating education systems, accessing appropriate support, and managing the emotional impact on the whole family.

Alongside this lived experience, I have undertaken specialist training in Autism and Mental Health, qualifying as a Neuro-affirmative practitioner (Distinction). This has shaped a more flexible and individualised approach to therapy — particularly for those who may not feel supported by more traditional models.

If you are neurodivergent, I offer a collaborative, strength-based approach tailored to your needs, creating a space that works for you.

If you are a parent or carer of a child with additional needs, I also offer a supportive space to explore the emotional challenges that can arise — from navigating school systems and assessments, to managing stress, isolation, and the ongoing demands of caregiving.

Trauma Support

I have specialized professional training and extensive experience supporting individuals who have experienced either single incident trauma, or chronic / complex trauma rooted in adverse childhood experiences or prolonged traumatic events.

I understand that trauma can affect how we feel, think, and relate to others, often in ways that are not always easy to recognise or articulate, and might manifest in unhelpful coping mechanisms. My approach is gentle, paced, and grounded in creating a sense of safety — allowing you to explore your experiences in a way that feels manageable and supportive. Together, we can begin to make sense of what you have been through, helping to reduce overwhelm and support a greater sense of stability, understanding, and self-connection.
